About HOPE: The Will Herndon Research Fund
HOPE: The Will Herndon Research Fund at Beyond Batten Disease Foundation was founded in 2009 by Missy and Wayne Herndon, the parents of Will Herndon. When Will was 6 years old, Missy and Wayne received the devastating diagnosis that their oldest son was suffering from a very rare, genetic, fatal, degenerative brain disease called juvenile Batten disease. With a terminal diagnosis and no viable treatment on the horizon, Missy sent out a prayer request by email to her family and friends to pray for Will. The prayer request went viral and she received an outpouring of responses from people all over the world. They sent words of love, faith and HOPE. These words inspired her to take action and not accept this fate for her son. A fund was created to raise money for research and help save Will. Since that time, through grass roots fundraising and the support of this generous community called The Woodlands, HOPE has raised over $8,800,000 locally for juvenile Batten disease research. The funds that have been raised over the last, almost 13 years, have provided HOPE to so many families with children with this terrible disease and has lead the way for one of the most promising drug discoveries in the history of the disease. This research is happening locally at the Neurological Research Institute in the Texas Medical Center. Due to Covid, we had experienced some unexpected delays in beginning the trial, but we always had HOPE! (DRUMROLL!!!!)
On Wednesday, February 2, 2022, the week of Will's 19th birthday, Will walked into Texas Children's Hospital and became PATIENT #1 for the Compassion Use Clinical Trial for the treatment CLN3 Juvenile Batten Disease!!!!!!!! A treatment that has great promise to not just slow the progression of Will's condition but STOP the progression! This could not have been possible without the amazing, non-stop support of our community and our generous supporters like you! We are FOREVER grateful to each and every one of you! We are excited to share more information and celebrate at HOPE on the Green 2022 with you all!
